Tracey Deer - 2009 Don Haig Special Jury Prize Award Winner

In 2000, Tracey Deer, a Mohawk from the community of Kahnawake, QC, near Montreal, graduated from the film studies program at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. and planned to go to Hollywood. But a chance call from Montreal's Rezolution Pictures to work as an assistant on Neil Diamond's documentary One More River changed her course. Three months into the film -- which looks at the turmoil resulting from the Cree Nation's controversial hydro dam deal in Quebec -- Deer was promoted to co-director.

She went on to make two more docs (coproduced by Rezolution and the National Film Board) that tackle taboo topics within the aboriginal community.

Deer has launched her own company, Mohawk Princess Pictures, and wrote and directed Escape Hatch, her first half-hour dramedy, which she describes as "a native take on Sex and the City.
